MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

CHRISTCHURCH. (Before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Five first offenders, none of whom appeared, were fined the amount of their bail, £l, plus expenses of arrest. A REMAND. A charge of attempting to steal three pairs of shoes, valued at £3 15s, the property of Cusack and Co., on May 25, was preferred against Leslie Ross M’Kenzie, for whom Mr M’Lachlan appeared. M’Kenzie was remanded till June 4. When the question of bail was raised, Detective-Sergeant Young said that there were several other allegations against the accused. He sent a boy to Cusack and Co.’s establishment with a fictitious letter. When accosted by a detective, he had ran off and tried to effect an escape. Bail was allowed at £IOO, with one surety of £IOO. PROBATIONER FINED. For a breach of the terms of his probation John James M’Gifford was fined £5. He was described by De-tective-Sergeant Young as a very unsatisfactory probationer, who had been previously imprisoned for a breach of probation. Mr Cuthbert, who appeared for the accused, said that he had work to go to. “He will not be so lightly treated next time,” said the Magistrate. MAINTENANCE CASES. (Before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M.) For disobeying a maintenance order, Arthur Albert Hurcombe was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended if he pays £5 arrears forthwith and £3 within fourteen days. Gerald Richard Pigott Allpress, for disobeying a maintenance order, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended while he pays 2s 6d per week off arrears. Leslie John Mellor was sentenced tQ fourteen days’ imprisonment on each of two charges of disobeying maintenance orders. In each case the warrant is to be suspended while he pays 2s 6d off arrears per week on each order in addition to current maintenance.
