“MEN DISCHARGED FIT NOW CRUMPLING UP.”

Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, May 27. That there is as great a need as ever for the work of patriotic societies was stressed by the chairman of the Otago Patriotic Society (Mr Clark) at the annual meeting to-day. Men discharged apparently fit were in advancing years crumpling under the strain, he said. During its existence. the society had expended £174,618. The committee had considered the advisability of earmarking a certain amount for the future, but as each year brought larger claims it dare not refuse the needs of to-day for those of the future. The committee had spent a considerable sum on soldiers in the North Island, who seemed to have had an even more difficult time than in Otago. The treasurer reported that the amount now in hand was £45,706, estimated to last, at the present rate, for twelve years.
