ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE V. M’GLASHAN COLLEGE.

BATTING COLLAPSES ON DEAD WICKET. The annual cricket match between the first elevens of St Andrew’s College and M’Glashan College (Dunedin) was played yesterday on the St Andrew’s ground. The weather was beautifully fine, but the wicket was slow and a little sodden as the result of recent I& The visiting captain, J. M. Sidey, won the toss from Esson, the St Andrew's captain. Thomson and Elder opened to the bowling of Wybert and Kyle. On a dead wicket the ball was inclined to •’bang” a little, and the batsmen were at a disadvantage. The start was disastrous, both th*

opening batsmen succumbing to Wybert. a medium bowler who was turning in from leg. Two wickets were down for 9 runs, and when Kyle skittled Begg the board showed 18—3—2. Kyle was pitching up good length slow leg-breaks. Burt and Armstrong made a stand,- but Burt went after a sound 15. 32—4—15. Sidey played carefully, and assisted Armstrong to add 20 runs for the fifth W'icket. Armstrong played nicely for top score with. 19, showing attractive strokes to the off; The rest of the innings was a debacle, White being the only man to make a stand. The innings closed for the poor total of 72. Kvle and Wybert each took three wickets at a small cost. Fairburn, a fast bowler, took two for 15. Dowling, who swung into the wind, had the batsmen well tied up, and took two wlclceto for 7. runs in 7 overs. . The fielding was fair. Ft Andrew's opened more disastrously than did their opponents. Good bowling, « dead wicket and lack, of enterprise arid ooandence on the part of the batsmen resulted in the first four being dismissed for only five runs. Another timid stand and another wicket. 6—5 —O. Sidev, a right-hand medium bowler with a high delivery, was sending down beautifully pitched off-breaks. His accurate length and sudden turn-in caused the batsmen to lift, and in his first five overs he took four wickets for five runs. C. Begg, at the other end. was bowling slow leg-breaks, and in five maiden over* took one wicket. The rot continued, and seven wickets were down for 13 runs. Dunnet aroused enthusiasm by hitting the first boundary of the inning’s. The Innings was improved by Dunnet and Taylor who. by steady and cautious batting, were instrumental in the total Caching 43. Sidey and Begg bowled Both were dangerous, hut were treated with more respect than they merited. The St Andrew’s batting was very weak and was below the best secondary school standard. M’Glashan second innings opened badly, three wickets falling for five runs. C. Begg and Armstrong played nicely, but the tall responded feebly and the side was out for 92 runs. Kyle and Wybert were again the factors in the low scorSt Andrew's showed much better form in their second strike, aggressive batting resulting in a .score of 105 for six wickets. They failed by 16 to obtain the necessary runs for a win, the score at the drawing of stumps being 105- for six wickets, and the match resulted in a draw. Macartney and Dowling batted brightly, scoring at a fast rate. Scores: — M’GLASHAN COLLEGE. First Innings. W. W. Thomson, b Wybert 3 E. N. Elder, c and b Wybert 1 L. R. Burt, Ibw b Wybert 15 C.
