THE COMPETITIONS.

YESTERDAY’S ITEMS. The competitions continue to attract good attendance in the Municipal Concert Hall. The items last evening were, varied, and provided an entertainment which, evidently, was greatly enjoyed Some of the singing in the evening was particularly well received. Following are the results, with some of the comments by the judges:— OPERATIC DANCE DUO. (Sixteen and over.) Miss Ivy Fowler (Christchurch) and Miss M. Grose (Papanui), “ Fire Birds,” 87 1 Miss Peggy Nelson (Christchurch) and Miss Enid Lawson (Christchurch ), SO 2 Miss Vera Wilkins (Christchurch) and Miss Violet Robertson (Papanui), “ Pas de Deux,” 77 . . 3 The winners danced well, and gave a good performance. Misses Nelson and Lawson gave a good effect as far as costumes are concerned. HUMOROUS RECITATION. (Boys under sixteen.) Lester Moller (Dunedin). 90 .... 1 Jack Wilton (Linwood), 78 2 The winner was commended for his good work, his humour being well brought out and very refreshing. The second boy gave “ not a bad piece of humour,” but was too noisy. SHAKESPEAREAN RECITATION (Under twenty-one.) Miss Hilda Scurr (Dunedin), 86 .. 1 Miss Joyce Hould (Dunedin), 82 . . 2 Mr N. West (Dunedin), 80 3 Miss Scurr, in “ Lady Constance,* 4 presented the emotional parts of the character very well, and gave a nice finish to her work. Miss Ilould, in a selection from “ Twelfth Night,” showed a sense of the whole scene. Some of her recitation was given too quickly, otherwise it, was an artistic piece of work. PIANO DUET. (Sixteen and under eighteen.) Miss M. Minson (Christchurch) and Master J. Craddock (Christchurch). “Concerto,” 91 1 Miss M. Williams (Spreydon) and Miss D. Williams (Spreydon), “ Ruy Bias,” 87 . ... 2 Miss G. Davies (St Albans) and Miss R. Gibbs (St Albans), “ Hexantanz,” 84 3 The winners have full, rich tone, with firm rhythm, and gave an outstanding performance of distinct merit. SACRED SOLO. (Tenor.) W. Bradshaw (Linwood), “Sound an Alarm.” 92 1 E. Rogers (Waltham), "Sound an Alarm,” 90 2 L. C. Quane (Christchurch). "If With All Your Heart,” 8S .... 3 Mr Bradshaw has a voice of excellent material, well in tune, and very fine high notes, which come out with clearness. Mr Quane has a very pleasant quality of \ioice. VOCAL DUET. (Ladies.) Miss Irene Seymour (Cashmere) and Miss Rea Sutcliffe (Lvttelton), “ Night Hymn at Sea.” 90 1 Miss Jean Johnson (Riccarton) and Miss Eveline Hill (Riccarton), * “ Farewell to Summer,'' 89 .... 2 Miss Kathleen Chappie .(Addington) and Miss Alice Chapman (Sydenham), “Autumn Song,” 88 . . 3 The winners showed nice blending and splendid cohesion and sympathy throughout. Misses Johnson and Hill have beautiful voices, and Misses Chappie and Chapman showed good balance, their words were clear and their enunciation was beautiful. SACRED SOLO. (Baritone.) Own Selection. Open. W. Toomey (Christchurch), “Fear Ye Not, O Israel," 93 1 A. P. Caithness (Linwood), “God is Our Refuge," 86 2 K. Perry (Christchurch), ” How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings,” S 3 3 All three competitors were commended. Mr Perry has a voice of beautiful quality, but needs more resonance: his intonation was very good on the whole, and his expression tasteful, but needs amplifying. Mr Caithness has a voice of good material ami intonation was very good. VOCAL SOLO. (Ladies.) v New Zealand Composer. Miss Leila Blafcß (Christchurch), 90 7 Miss Irene Seymour (Cashmere). 89 2 Miss Anita Graham (Christchurch), 88 3 VOCAL SCHOLARSHIP. (Ladies.) Own Selection. * Recalls M-iss Irene Seymour (Cash mere), “ Vissi a aric Mrs L. A. Waters (Lyttelton), “Mother, You Know the Story ”r Mrs, L. K. Dulieu tSt Aibans), “ A Blood-red Ring.”
