At Is in the pound, the amount of rates which the City Council will receive will in round numbers be £4200, allowing a margin for possible losses. Last year’s total valuation of City property amounted to £99,000, nearly £15.000 in excess of the present year, and the amount of rates which the City Council will receive will be below last year’s receipts to the extent of £750. To the Editor of the “Star”. Sir,—l see by the "Star” that the City Council are about to improve the streets of Christchurch before the winter sets in, and by today's “Times” tjiat tenders have been accepted for the formation of some of them (which, by the way, have no houses near). Might I ask why they have delayed making Peterborough Street from Madras Street to Manchester Street? Now, I live near Madras Store, and have three children going to St Luke’s School, for which I have to pay e\'ery Monday in advance, and should it rain during any part of the week I am forced to keep them at home, or allow them to remain in school with their feet wet. and mud up to their ankles, or send them round by the river. I have made inquiries, and find that none of our City Councillors attend St Luke’s Church, or have property near the place. If they had that street would have been formed long ago, I think. A good rhany residents in the locality are hard-working men, who, after paying for their children’s schooling, do not care to be compelled to keep them at home in wet weather, in consequence of the extremely bad condition of this pdrtion of Peterborough Street.
