COAST MINES IDLE BECAUSE OF PROTEST.

(Special to the “Star.”) GREYMOUTH. May 2.

The coal miners at the Coast mines were idle to-day. The interruption was caused by a sympathetic strike, sympathy being extended towards the miners at Millerton, 346 of whom are being prosecuted for an alleged breach of the award, due to a cessation of work at the Millerton mines.

“So far as I know, it is just a form of protest against the prosecution of the Millerton men.’’ said one mine manager. when questioned, and the management of other mines gave similar replies. The State. Blackball and Dobson mines are affected, in addition to those in the Buller district, involving 1000 men. and the loss of wages will be 1 considerable. There is no scarcity of orders at the mines at present, and work was available for the men had they desired to take it. Yesterday, being May Day. was also in idle day at the various mines, due to the non-appearance of the workers. It is stated that May Day, although it does not appear in the awai d, is not objected to as a holiday.

To-day’s stoppage is. however, in a different category, and it wiil be interesting to see whether legal proceedings will follow.
