AUTUMN RACING IN SOUTH CANTERBURY. BRIGHT PROSPECTS AT WASHDYKE. The autumn meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club will be held at Washdvke this week, commencing to-morrow and concluding on Saturday. Large fields are engaged in most of the events and the racing should be more than usually interesting, with competitors drawn from a very wide area, extending from North Canter- ’ bury to Southland. The presence of a big contingent of Riccarton horses will make the meeting very attractive to Christchurch sportsmen, who are well catered for by the Railway Department. A special train will leave Christchurch each day at 7.52 a.m., arriving at the course at 11.28 a.m. The return journey from Timaru will be started at 6.35 p.m. and the train is due in Christchurch at ; 10 p.m. The first race will be started at noon. The following is the programme:— Noon. TEKAPO HURDLE HANDICAP, of 140
lhe thirteen competitors are a ' mixed lot, some of them having only moderate form. Aberfeldy, at his best, ' represents a class above the others, and the only question is his case is whether he is quite ready. Tarleton showed great promise in the spring, but he is an unreliable customer. On Waimate form Goldtown should race well, though Bonatic may be capable of improvement.
Camisader has some useful hack form to his credit in the south and he should run w’ell here, but he will find Rotor very difficult to dispose of. some useful performances in the spring, he lost form, but he was at his best again at Easter, when he required only ■ an ounce of luck to win. He should i break the spell this week. 1.20 p.m.
Among the older division in this big field there are several winners. Scoff has the best credentials and he is smart over five furlongs. Malmsey is another useful galloper. The maidens in the field include several who can go fast, but nothing of such promise as Merivale, a two-year-old filly likely to be a winner in much better company next season. 2 D.m.
Though it contains no horse of outstanding class, the field is much above the average and there are several whose prospects look bright. King Balboa will be a popular pick. He was beaten in his recent engagements in Southland, but prior to that he ran several races, showing attractive form. He should he hard to beat. There are six candidates from Riccarton, all of them in good fettle. Battle Colours has shown excellent track form since he won at Easter, and so have Don Jose and Sir Roy. The running of Fresco on the West Coast gives him a good chance. Assurance has been galloping well, but he is an uncertain customer. Front Rank looks at her best and she may prove the best of the Riccarton horses. 2.40 p.m. SMITHFIELD HANDICAP, of 175 sovs. Six furlongs.
even with his big weight he is certain to race well. He represents better clas than Black Duke, though the latter has some useful performances to his credit. Of the others in the field, Gold Brick may prove the most reliable.
Some of the cross-country horses may not be quite ready for a hard struggle. If Adjutor is sufficiently forward, he should be hard to beat, as he represents useful form among hurdlers who would be much too good for most of the others. 4 p.m. ROSEWILL HACK HANDICAP, of ISO sovs. S«vun furlnnirw
Fair Exchange 7 6 Honeycomb has been galloping well since he showed useful form at Easter and the imported horse may open his winning account here. Among the others Valves is likely to improve on an} r thing he has done so far. 4.40 p.m. DONCASTER HANDICAP, of 175 sovs.
Fairy Herald 8 6 In spite of his weight. Thomdale is certain to run a solid race. This is the type of race which suits him. Lucy Locket may keep him busy.
