All started in the Avondale Hurdles, the opening event of the day. Lady Cintra was a slightly better favourite than Uralla, with Lady Spalpeen next in demand. Coming to the first fence along the back the order was Lady Cintra, Karamu, Lady Spalpeen, Uralla, and Pekatahi. Karamu then took charge and led past the stand from Lady Cintra, Lady Spalpeen, and Uralla, who were racing together, Pekatahi havinj: fallen at the fence coming into the straight. Along the back Karamu led Lady Sintra, Lady Spalpeen, and Uralla. The order was the same across the top, where Uralla came to grief. Turning for home Karamu was showing the way to Lady Spalpeen and Lady Cintra (who had both 'been jumping badly), and this was the order as they passed the post, where Karamu had an advantage of three lengths from Lady Spalpeen, who was a similar distance in front of Lady Cintra. Karamu, who paid a huge dividend a few years ago at Ellersiie, was again the outsider of the field. C. Hastings, the rider of Pekatahi, sustained a broken collarbone. Restaurant was the only defection from the Dominion Handicap, for which there were twenty-five runners. Parfait Amour, who was favourite, carried £915, Bombarder £6BO, and The Fox £625 being next in demand. At the start Luminary, Josie Melville, Parfait Amour. Miss Myrtle was fourth, followed by Maori Boy, Bombarder, Kyngzone, Moe Hall, Princess Rain, Ponticus, Double Mint and Kaihonemai. Luminary was number thirteen on the card.
In the Nursery Handicap, the public selected the bracket, Lucy Rose and Elope, as first choice with £S9O invested on their number, while Jolly Money and Perception were also solidly backed. When the field , settled down, Te Atiawa, Avon Court, Gold Money, White Wings, Jolly Money-, Valquette, L\tcv Rose, and Perception were racing in that order, and, crossing the top, Te Atiawa was showing the way- to Fancy Boy, White Wings, Avon Court, Perception, Jolly Money, and Lucy Rose.
