ELECTRIC CAR AND PORT TIMETABLE.
To the Editor. Sir, —Allow me once again, through the columns of your paper, to draw attention to a much-needed train between the hours of 4.5 pin. and 5.25 p m., and as the new electric car is running on this line as an experiment it could fill this gap most suitably by leaving Christchurch at, say/ 4.45 or 4.50, and so cater for those workers who cease work at 4.30 in the city. I have no hesitation in stating that it would get a full complement of passengers. The traffic management evidently intend to alter the running of the 5.25 back to either 5.10 or 5:15, as on two different nights now the guard on this train has asked the passengers on this train which time they want the train to leave, 5.10 or 5.15, and if the guard can tell which the majority is for from amongst the babel of tongues, then, sir, he is entitled to a seat in Parliament without the necessity of an election. Of these two times I should think 5.10 the most suitable, and I think the vast majority of those who cease work at 5 p.m. could catch this train, as the 7.25 am. train from Lyttelton is seldom in Christchurch before. 7.4 S a.m., and if these workers get to work before S a.m. they can get back to the station by 5.10. Again, sir, if the workers ceasing work at 5 p.m. to I wait till the 5.45 p.m. train they have not as long to wait as the worker who knocks off at 4.30 and has to wait till 5.25. There is also a gap in the time-table at the Lyttelton end between 5.10 and 6.20 p.m., which could be filled very nicely by the electric car, which, leaving Christchurch at 450 p.m. or 4.45 p.m., and arriving at Lyttelton at 5.5 p.m., could be despatched from there at 5.30 or 5.35 p.m., thereby not clashing with the ordinary train service. The electric car used in this manner would be very much appreciated bv the public, and would fill a long-wanted necessity. Sir, now 'that, we have the daylight-saving coming, what is the use of us getting up an hour earlier this summer only to sit and waste it waiting for a train on the Christchurch station ? Hoping those in charge of the traffic will see their way clear to give it a trial. They will have the satisfaction of knowing that, having filled a gap in the time-table, they have enabled a number of passengers also to fill a gap at the tea-table a good deal earlier.—l am, etc., SQUARE WHEELS.
