NOTES. Mr P. Sturrock, secretary of the Beautifying Society, has received word from the Town" Clerk that the Works Committee have given orders for all soil from the roads to be dumped in the Station Reserve to enable that area to be planted this winter. The appeal of Mr J. A. Henry, headmaster at Waimairi School, for books to form a school library received an imediate response. The school committee voted £6, and this, with the books sent in, has enabled a library to be set tip in each room. The total number of books is 250. Mr Henry is making one more appeal. He would like to see the school walls made attractive with pictures. The child mind responds quickly to beautiful surroundings, and it is to be hoped that the school walls will shortly have nothing of a prison look. Mr W. A. Foster, choirmaster at St Paul's Church has expressed himself willing to assist with the formation of a brass band, and with Mr J. H. Reynolds will act as co-convener at a meeting to be called shortly. It is understood that a resident in the district holds a set of instruments insured for £l2B and he will let a local band have them for £75. METHODIST. The annual meeting of the Home Mission was held in the Methodist Church on Wednesday evening, the Rev H. L. Blamires presiding over a good attendance. The Rev A. Leveridge spoke-, on “The Vision of a Transformed Church.” Musical items were given by Misses X’. Black. K. Bond, and Mr A. Murray Jones. The financial report was read by Miss I. Robinson and proved very satisfactory. ROUND THE WORLD IN NINETY MINUTES. Last Thursday week the Rev IT. L. Blamires took an attentive audience at the Memorial Hall on a trip round the world in ninety minutes. Many beautiful slides were shown and the entertainment was a most appreciated TENNIS. On the King's Birthday St Paul’s played North Beach, home and away. The A teams played at St Paul’s, and the Papanui team put up a good fight but went down by 112 games to 97. For St Paul’s Orbell won 9-6, M'Millan 9-7. Miss E. Ward 6-3, Mrs M’Auley 6-5. In the doubles M’Millan and Burrell won 9-7, Mrs Burrell and Mrs M'Auley 9-7. and M’Millan and Miss E. Ward 9-5. Burrell and Mrs M’Auley 9-7. PERSONALS. Mr H. C. D. Somerset returned to Oxford on Monday. Part of his vacation was spent in Wellington at the Secondary Schools’ Conference held there. Mr Connelly, Kaikourai, Dunedin, returned home this week after spending an extended holiday with his relatives, Mr and Mrs Spiers, Hawthorne Road. A “Kitchen tea” was tendered Miss Brotherson by her friends at the Sanitarium Hostel recently. Mr G. Adair acted at M.C.. and the presents brought were many. Duets were sung by Misses Barthgate and Woodfield, and by Miss Carpenter and Mr Cleave Robson, a euphonium solo was given by Mr W. F. Grubb, and recitations were given by

Miss E. Fraser, and Master Lance Kent, and with games and so on, a very pleasing time was brought to a close. A verv pleasant evening was spent last Saturday, when the members of the committee of St Paul s Tennis Club were the guests of Mr and Mrs F. Burrell, at a card evening at their residence, ITarewood Road. Five hundred was played, and the winners of the first prizes were: Mrs Mawson 1, Miss Banks (consolation), Mr Gartner 1. Mr Mawson (consolation). Afterwards supper was served. Among those present were Mrs Orbell. Mr and Mrs Burrell, Mr and Mrs J. Mawson, Mr and Mrs XV. Baynes, Miss A. Banks, Miss Searell, Miss Hassall, Miss Bolt, Miss F. M’Donald. Messrs E. Orbell, H. Tillman, E. Murray, G. Keetley, RCartner. GIRL GUIDES. Papanui has no boy scouts but shortlv a girl guides troop will be formed. At the Gaiety Hall on Tuesdav, Mrs Payne presided over a meeting. and the following officers were elected: —Mrs Stanley Foster, treasurer, Miss Evans, secretary,, and Mesdames Mac Andrew, Ross Lascelles, Torrance, Hamber, Martin, Seabrook, Noall and Miss M’Ewan. A NICHT XX"I’ BURNS. The Memorial Hall last Tuesday was packed to the doors to hear a programme of song and story with Robert Burns as the central figure. This is the hall’s record seated audience, and long before the time advertised for the commencement the ante rooms were all robbed of their chairs to seat the patrons. The lecture was given by the Rev J. Millar and he was assisted by the Highland Pipe Band, and a large mimber of vocalists. The whole evening was a most successful one. PERSONAL. Miss M. Blake and Mr A. B. Simpson have returned from a short vacation. and have now resumed their teaching at Belfast again. ST SILAS MISSION. The annual meeting was held in St Silas Mission Room on Tuesday, June ]. at 7.30 p.m., the vicar, the Rev XX". IJ. Orbell, being chairman. A good number of parishioners were present. The annual balance-sheet was produced and adopted and a combined committee of twelve members elected. Several votes of thanks were passed to parishioners who had done excellent work for the church at Styx. A committee of three ladies was formed to run a ladies’ guild and prayer circle. Permission was granted Mr Chamberlain and the male Sunday School teachers to. run an Anglican boys’ gymnasium club in the Mission Room. It was resolved that the three members previously elected should form an Anglican boys' gymnasium club for church boys over ten years of age. The first meeting of all interested will take place on Sunday afternoon at 2.30 in the Mission Room.
