WHERE “GO-SLOW” DOES NOT PAY.

WORKERS DO THEIR JOB AT THE DOUBLE.

(Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON, February 25. An optimistic view of conditions in England is given by Mr 11. W. Lawrence, the Wellington analyst, who has returned from a lengthy tour. The English people, he says, are better dressed, better fed, more prosperous and a good deal happier than when he last visited the Old Land twenty-four years ago. Ip spite of the income tax, people >vith moderate means are much better off in England than in New Zealand, as the cost of living at Home is very much cheaper, bread costing only from 8d to 9d, as against Is Id to Is 2d in the Dominion. • “ It was astonishing to see the pace at which the workmen do their jobs in the State* and in Canada,’’ said Mr Lawrence. “At one of the big towns on the Great Lakes the men on the waterfront were actually trotting about their loading operations. “ ‘ What makes you fellow’s go so fast?’ I asked one of them, “ ‘ Oh, I know where you come from,’ the worker replied. ‘ You come fsom Australia.’ “‘No, I come from New Zealand,’ I replied. “ 4 I knew it was from either of those places,’ the worker said. 4 We don’t adopt their methods here. You see we are paid to work, and we work. I have just earned ten dollars in the last two hours. Isn’t that worth working far? Go-slow methods don’t pay a man in this country.! ” Two little children had a narrow escape from serious injury at the intersection of St Asaph and Colombo Streets shortly before 8.30 this morning. In making a blind rush across the road they ran directly in front of a lotry going south, and only the presence of mind of the driver saved the elder boy, w’hilst the younger one, in endeavouring to beat a -retreat, was run over by a cyclist proceeding to the city. Luckily he was more frightened than hurt.
