I ST PAUL’S METHODIST CHURCH. ISt Paul’s Methodist Church was crowded on Wednesday evening, when a party of talented Alaori singers and performers gave a special entertainment in aid cf the Home Mission Fund. Mr 11. Buttle, who presided, welcomed the visitors. Weird waiatas (seldom heard by Europeans), poi acI lion songs, hymn singing, folk songs, and Maori greetings were all introduced I by the talented company, and much 1 enjoyed by the audience. Amongst I the performers were representatives from the Ngapuhi (North Auckland), Waikato (South Auckland), Maniapoto (King Country), Ngatiwhatua (Kaipara), Ngatirarua (Marlborough) and the Taranaki tribes. The programme, unique in this part of Maoriland, was a great treat to the gatherFOR THE SEAMEN. The executive of the Sumner Ladies’ Guild of the Seamen’s Institute have decided to hold a book and coin afternoon in the Jellicoe Hall on July 1, from 3 to 5 p.m. VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE. Superintendent J. Carter presided over the annual meeting of the Volunteer Fire Brigade. The annual report showed a very successful year's work and the balance-sheet showed receipts £7o 7s 7d and expenditure £74 14s 3d. The chairman moved a hearty vote cf thanks to Fireman J. A. Nutta l for his gift of the Nuttall Shield for local competition, and Branchman G. Hines was appointed the delegate to lepresent the brigade at the C.P.F.B.A. at their meeting on June 19. The date of the annual social was fixed foi July 24 and it was decided to engage Nuttail's Orchestra. The Borough Council wrote approving of the appointment of Mr J. Senior, of Redclifts, as a member cf the brigade. RICHMOND HILL GOLF CLUB. Air Sead-Gowing presided over a meeting of the golf committee recently, when it was decided to hoia the Golf Club dance on July 1. Air I. Lawrence is secretary, and Air W. G. Black treasurer. It was decided to make the decorations a special feature of this now annual fixture. THE BEAUTIFYING ASSOCIATION. The Sumner Beautifying Association is now tackling the problem of the Queen Carnival in earnest. This effort. Combined with that of Redclirfs, is entirely devoted to improvements on the waterfront. At its last meeting the expresident, Air I. B. Boulton, outlined the proposals of the ■ entertainment committee, which included social gatherings, an orchestral concert and other attractions. Mrs S. W. Dean reported net profits from the dance recently organised as £l4 Is fid. Arrangements were made for a thorough canvass of the borough for new members. It was resolved to plant a shelter belt of pinus insignis trees at the south end of Scarborough and to plant the loop at the tram shelter with veronicas, using the late Mr F. Pratt’s donation for part of the same. . SEA BIRDS. During the past three weeks the large number of sea birds on the estuary and in the bay have attracted much attention from residents. The huge flocks are quite unusual. At one time it was thought their presence was

due to a visitation of whale feed, but this scarcely accounts for their presence in such numbers now. PERSONAL. Members of the C team cf the Croquet Club recently paid a surprise visit to Mrs I. Wilson, the vice-captain of the club, and spent a very enjoyable evening at her residence, “Branthoime,” in Head Street. The programme included musical items, songs and competitions. Below the termination of a very happy function, Airs S. A. Booth, the secretary, asked the “guest of the evening” to accept a very handsome morocco handbag as a token of the high esteem in which she was held by the members of the C team and as a mark of their deep appreciation of her work during the year. Musical, items brought a most successful “visit” to a fitting termination. Air J. Lee, of Euston Street, leaves on Monday for Wellington, where he has recently accepted a business pointmentMiss I. Lawrence has been spending a day or two in Timaru as a member of Charities Unlimited. Superintendent J. Carter and Branchman J. Hines represented the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade at the fireman’s funeral in the city this ItIFLE SHOOTING. At this week’s shoot of the Ladies’ Miniature Rifle Club tho shoot for the trophy resulted in a tie for Aliss AI. Whitfield and Mrs F. J. Glackin. The shoot ofr resulted in a win for the junior member, Mrs Glackin winning the button for the highest score. SCARBOROUGH IMPROVEMENTS. For some weeks now improvements have been noticed in course of progress on the Scarborough Hill immediately above the road leading to Boat Harbour. Many years ago, this slope was tackled by the old Beautifying As sociation, the members working on the dangerous cliff edges by means of ropes, and succeeding in planting a long lino of niesombryautheimim. The new work includes the cutting of a path from which an excellent view of sea, plain and mountains can ho obtained. About this are being planted trees and shrubs of various sorts and the completed work will constitute a decided asset at the Scarborough end of the beach. Most of the improvements are on a small reserve and, so far, the work has been promoted by Alessrs V. E. Hamilton and Corfe. REDCXIFFS QUEEN CARNIVAL. Tho barrow fete was a great success, the formal opening being conducted by the Mayoress, Airs W. H. Nicholson. The baby show winners were:—Over six months. Jack Williamson i, Margaret Hollobon 2 ; under six months, Baby Marshall and Baby Akins equal I, and Boy O’Connor 2. Competitions were won by Aliss Nora Jones, Alisses Cook and Grether, Aliss G. Wood and Air Can trill. Help ers were Airs Dixon, Airs Newbery, Airs H. Lo Page. Airs Pudge, Mrs Comerford, Airs Martin, Airs Smith, Alessrs Betteley, Newberry, lllingham, Walters and Hooper. For the evening, Airs ICing arranged a splendid concert, with lighting effects by Air Ingham. The following assisted, Alisses G. Sped lock. Lena King, Ain vis Woodward. Alice Greenlees, Evelyn Lo Page, Jean Coleman, Vera Martin, Dulcie and Alvrtle. Thelma and Doris Jarrlin, and Masters Sha nd, Woodward and King, and Messrs J. Radley. J.
