Andrews was present at the invitation of the members and outlined the work proposed to be done at St James Park. There was room for two cricket pitches, and only one icotball ground, and no tennis, Air Andrews stated, but part would be reserved for a children’s playground. He further went into the question of the roads and footpaths, and stated that a sum of over £3OOO would be immediately available out of the loan money to go towards channelling and asphalt footpaths. There was no game played last Saturday by the seniors on account of the representative match. The .-juniors did not play either, but for a different reason. ' In their case no referee turned up, which was just as well for Linwood, for they were a few men short, The Fifths only just won against Addington by 3 to 2. The selectors have decided to take a stand with those players v»ho do not turn up to practice. For the future preference will be given to the trained ODDFELLOWS’ ANNUAL BALL. FOOTBALL DANCE. Last Tuesday’s dance in aid cf the funds of the Woolston Club’s queen was not very well supported, which was a pity considering the trouble the committee had gone to. The euchre winners were: —Mrs Mur.ro I, Mrs C. Smith 2, Aliss Harris 3, Mrs Robinson 4. Mr George Derrett 1, Mr S. Munro 2. Mr D. Power 3, Air Smith 4. Ladies from each club waited on the supper. TELEPHONES. An inquiry at the Telegraph Office for a telephone by a Papanui resident revealed the fact that none were available. The clerk at the public office could not promise one under six months, but the engineer in charge was more optimistic. No new connections can be given till the new underground cable is connected up, but the engineer stated that the work was being pushed on as quickly as possible, and another two months, he thought, might sec the work finished. At each of the underground junction wells, hundreds of wires had to be jointed up, and there was only room for one man and an assistant to work at one time. Asked as to the trouble that invariably occurred to the automatic telephones of Papanui after a rain, he stated that it was caused by the deterioration of the overhead casings and would only be rectified when the new wires were read}-. ■NOTES. It would be interesting to know if there is a sunshine recorded in the district. It often appears as though Papanui. on a frosty morning, gets the sun an hour before the city does.
