MUNICIPAL BAND'S DANCE. On Wednesday evening a very sue-' ccbht'ul dance and euchre wad held in Joviand by tho Municipal Band. Th.> results of the euchre were as follows: Indies, first prize, Mrs L. Grcbben, second, Mrs A. Kershaw; third Mrs JB Grammar. Gentlemen, first, E. P. IMiilar; tecond, A. Meredith; third, I’. Vinoent. Tho luckv spot prize was von by Miss E. Ayling and Mr 11. Burrows. Harband, on behalf of tlie officers and members, presented Mrs Hall with a bouquet in appreciation <Jf tho service she has rendered the union. Mrs C-atchpolo, of the W.C.T.U. Canada, spoke of her prohibition work in Canada and the United States and was listened to with great interest. Several items Avere given during the afternoon by Mesdames O. Smith, F. M. Mitchell and A. Bonnington, and Mrs F. A. Good. In tho evening the annual pa> Tip " social was held and the members end their friends turned out in large numbers. The Rev T Sarginson addressed tho meeting and there was an excellent, program nge arranged- Those contributing items -were Miss Eagle some. Mesdames Hewlett, Chapman, Campbell, Messrs N. Campbell, Goodman, Jones and AY. H. Moses. Much merriment was caused by the impromptu speeches, this item being wonby Mr Jones. Mr Caranagh acted as judge. Six new members were initiated. Y.P.C.T.r. Thai Young Peoples’ Christian Temperance Union hold their first annua* meeting on Friday last, when Mrs F. 31. Mitchell- presided over a good ralljy of members. Excellent "reports v,x*ro given by the secretary and treasurer and thesv* showed a substantial increase in membership and a good credit Lalanco. Mrs A. Hall, president W.C.T.U., addressed the meeting and congratulated, the members on their progress for the year. Tho following officers were then elected for the ensuing year. President, Mrs F. M. Mitchell; superintendent, Airs F. H. Good; vicepresidents, Miss T. Buxton, Mr N. Campbell, the Rev F. T. Read, and the Rev J. S. Young; secretary. Miss M. Moses.; treasurer. Miss A. Gibb; press reporter, Mrs Mitchell. Several members gave items during tho evening. | NEW BRIGHTON LIBRARY COMMITTEE. A meeting of the committee was held in the library on Friday evening. Juno 5. Present, the chairman, Mr Gamble, and Mesdames Joynt and Hockley, Messrs Scarr, Joynt and the librarian, Mr Miles. Tho balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £2l os 9d. The librarian's report stated that «s usual the autumn quarter showed a declino in the number of subscribers, many visitors having left for tho city. It was hoped their places would soon bo filled by others providing for read ing m the. winter evenings. He rocommended the deletion of some of the oldest and most worn boeis from th« library. Tho balance-sheet and report vers passed by the meeting and permission was given the librarian to delete un serviceable books. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. On Tuesday evening a match took place on tho New Brightou range against the “ Lyttelton Times,” rcaulting as follows : —- New Brighten.—Mrs Ball 31. Misses Tilly.short 32, Park 31, Mesdames M’Clelland 30, Burnieister 30, Stokes 32. Baschl 20, Moses 28; total 243. “Times.”—Miss Sherwood 30, Miss Henry 22, Messrs Hannah 25, Cossgroro GO, Crombie 23, Webber 31, 31agee IS, Bait 17; total 196. CARD EVENINGS. Tho Plunket Society as usual held a very successful euchre evening on last Tuesday. The prize-winners were: Ladies-—First, Mi>s Woodward; seccnu, Mrs Andrews. Gentlemen —First, Mr R. Miles; second, Mr C. Cummings. Consolation —Mrs Nicholles and Mrs O Donell. CHURCHES. At the morning service in the Presbyterian Church the subject will bo

“ The Gateway of Fuller Spiritual Life” and in the evening “Where John Knox’s Faith First Cast Anchor.” The Rev J. S. Young will conduct both services. In the evening Miss Langley will sing. There will be a celebration o? Holy Communion at both the eight ana eleven o’clock services at tho J3eacli Church on Sunday morning. At- the evening service the anthem “ Thou 1 Earth ” (Spohr) will bo rendered. The vicar will preach at all services. Tho soloist last (Sunday was ALr Frank Ward, whose singing was much appreciated. There will also be a service on Sunday evening at the North Beach schoolroom, at which tne Rev W. F. Knowles will officiate. The special homo mission services will be conducted. In tho morning tho Rev A. J. Seamer will be assisted by a party of Maoris, who will sing and speak. At 6.J0 the Rev R. B. Tinsley will preach and the choir will renders the anthem “Incline Thine Ear,” and Air Gill will sing a sacred solo. The anniversary will be continued on Thursday, when the Maori Party will a-gaiti visit New Brighton. A most enjoyable evening was spent at the Anglican Church schoolroom on Wednesday, the vicar presiding over the fourth series of the fortnightly socials. The frames and guessing competitions created a lot of fun, whilst the musical and other items were excellent. Items were given by the following. Mesdames Leighton and Miss Leighton, Air and Airs Scrimshaw, Air Farmer, Air Alulccck aryj Air Blackhum. Tho winners of the competitions were Miss Foote and Airs Saville. Supper was then served and the proceedings were terminated by a dance. ON DIT. That many thanks are due to Air E. J. Howard, ALP., for liis interesting and instructive lecture about South Africa on Wednesday evening. That the band’s dance on Wednesday evening was a most successful and enjoyable function. That at the Beresford Club’s euchre and dance on Monday evening jazzing was replaced by the Grand Old Duke of York. PERSONAL. A deputation from the New Brighton shopkeepers for tho Saturday halfholiday will leave on Tuesday evening for Wellington. The deputation now consists of Messrs J. Gamble, J. Shaw, Holloway and R. Bargrovc. A very pleasant afternoon was spent at Airs Bargrove’s liouso last. Tuesday to further the interests in the Christmas case of gifts, ’bandages, etc., to be sent to Nurses Bargrove and Blunt at tho Thangchow Hospital. Great interest was taken in the curious snaps and embroidery sent by Nurse Bargrovo to New Brighton. Airs Norman Ashton, Esplanade, entertained a few friends at a bridge party this eek. Misses Bassett, cf Sydney, spent a few davp here during the week. Mr and Airs Jack Wilson. Esplanade, are again in residence here.

NORTH BEACH NOTES.

GALA AND FORESHORE IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY. A largely attended meeting was held in the Surf Club pavilion on Alonday evening. Air E. Leaver presiding. Airs Hulme, who lias undertaken to produce the coronation ceremony, was present, and arrangements were mado for the opening of the Peace Alemoriai building on Saturday, July 18. Tho coronation ceremony will commence at 7.45 p.m., after which the official opening will take place This will be followed by a concert and dance. The prices of admission were fired at 2s for adults, and Is for children, an extra charge of Is being made for those remaining for the dance Owing to the limited accommodation of the building it was decided not to issue any complimentary tickets. Airs Hulmo will hold a meeting of tlio children taking part in the coronation ceremony together with their parents on Alonday evening in the Surf Club pavilion at eight o-cloek. NORTH BRIGHTON SCHOOL. A special meeting of tho committee was held on Wednesday evening, there being present; Messrs E. A. Al. Leaver (chairman), E. Bush (secretary), H. lnstone, A. Florance, S. Freeborn, Rev W. F. Knowles and Airs Goring. An apology for absence was received from Air A. E. Hutton. The headmaster was also in attendance. Quotations were received for asphalting the immediate surroundings of the school It was resolved that in view of the cost and tho urgency of the work, the Education Board be asked what, proportion of the cost it would bo prepared to contribute. Air James Deans has visited tho school and lias promised a donation of trees for planting, and Air H. L. Oakes having lent some gramophone records, ib was decided to forward a letter ol thanks to both. PRESENTATION. The two largo rooms made into one at the North Brighten School were filled with children and parents on Thursday afternoon. Whilst enjoying the music of the evening the children knew that there was another item- on the programme in which they were interested, this being a presentation to their esteemed headmaster. Air E. A. AI. Leaver, chairman of the School Committee, made the presentation, which consisted of a silver-mounted oak tray engraved, “ To Air and Airs J- F. Wilson, from North Brighton School children and friends, 1925,” and half a dozen china cups and saucers and plates. Air Leaver referred to tho good qualities of Air Wilson and the esteem in which he was held by the committee and residents. The teachers, children and residents desired to extend to Mr and Airs Wilson their best wishes, and he asked Air and Airs Wilson to accent the gifts as a token of the good friendship and heat wishes of all. Tho Rev .F. Knowles, at. the invitation of the chairman, extended r* hearty welcome to Mrs Wilson. Air Leaver, on behalf of the committed, welcomed the new teacher, Mr Kings * ley Chappie, and Misses Gibb and Armstrong. Air Wilson returned on behalf of Airs Wilson and himselr, and Air Chaopie voiced ihethanks cf the new teachers.
