FROM BAD TO WORSE.
NORTHCOTE SETTLEMENT. Sixteen of the total of fifty-three houses erected by the Government in tho Northcote Settlement at Papanui arc at present unoccupied, and the prospects of finding tenants for them aro j by no means encouraging. Three of the empty houses were recently being used as dormitories for boys attending St Bede’s College, but as they are no longer required for that purpose they have been handed back to the Government. The settlement has never been popular with homeseekers, and its unpopularity is increasing rather than diminishing. In February last there were fourteen empty houses and a couple of months ago the number had been reduced to eleven. •Since then, however, the three houses Tented by 6fc Bede’s College have been ; vacated and some of the tenants of other houses liar® shifted out of the i settlement. Of the thirty-seven tenant* | only about half have signed an agreetlio workers’ dwellings scheme. Meanwhile the empty houses are get- j ting into a state of disrepair, and it ia j probable that they will require a good deal of money spent on repairs to them before they will he oocunied again.
