Arthur Cliitonj a well-known miner at Rizriu and formerly chairman of the Westland County Council, whilst er.- i gaged it> sluicing operations at a claim on Back Creek this afternoon, was overwhelmed by a fall of earth from the face and washed into the sluice boxes and to the end of the tail-race, a distance of 700 yards. When assistance arrived Clifton was found to be seriously injured. Medical assistance was obtained and it was found necessary to carry the sufferer between two and three miles on a stretj cher over rough tradings-, before an | ambulance could be utilised to convey him to the Westland Hospital. The injuries include a gaping- wound on the top of the head, concussion and much bruising and he is suffering from shock. His conditions is serious, though he is showing remarkable signs of recovv-
