NORTH BEACH NOTES.
THE SCHOOL. The outside lighting at the school has been greatly improved by the installation of a powerful light at the south end. The improvenients havee been accomplished through the generosity of Mr W. J. Lane. The southwest winds have considerably scoured out round the concrete foundations, steps and drains, and levelling and claying will be necessary to prevent seriouts consequences VISITORS. The warm weather has brought largo, numbers to the beach, and itis years sine© so much surf-bathing was indulged in. Otf Thursday bathers were in the sea till after- midnight. The children from the Nazareth Hojs?© caaae to North Beach by speciai car on Monday and had a good time on the chute and in the surf. GALA. A meeting of the executive of the gala was held on Monday evening, when a preliminary balance-sheet was presented. The Ladies’ Committee is making a final effort in the shape of * fancy dress carnival at the racecourse to-night in aid of the North Boauii candidate for the Queen Carnival, PERSONAL. The sudden death of Mrs L. Skudden last week-end cast a gloom over North Beach. The deceased lady was exceptionally popular, being of a bright disposition and taking part in all the social activities of the district for some years past. Universal sympathy is felt with Mr Skudden, and with Mr and Mrs Pearce, parents of the deceased. The Rev E. Smith of Spreydon, Is staying at North Beach. Mr and Mrs Nixon, of Lower Riccarton, are spending a holiday at North Beach. Mr Johnson Lindley, one of the active pioneers of North Beach, is staying at “Moreaki,” on the Esplanade. Mr D. Gadd, of Tonks Street, has returned from a visit to the West Coast. Mrs Griffiths, of River Road, Richmond, is staying at Norton Street. Mrs A. J. Cole is staying at the Ozone Cafe Mr and Mrs J. M’Cracken and family, of Salisbury Street, for some years residents of Osborne Terrace. - are spending a holiday at North Beach. Mr J. F. Wilson, head master of North Beach School, is visiting the West Coast. Mr P. F. Hamilton of Chrystall Street, is stayiug at Osborne Terrace. Guiseppe Bignoli, the midget who has created much interest at Wirth’s Circus, narrowly sscaped a serious accident this morning. At the intersection of Manchester, High and Lichfield Streets, he came into collision, while cycling, with a motor-car. Tie jumped off his machine- just in time to avoid injury.
