THE COMPETITIONS.
FESTIVAL OPENS ON MONDAY. One of tbe most interesting events of the year, from a musical point of view, is the Competitions Festival. The budding talent of the city and country is brought into the light for public inspection, and is invited to blossom forth in friendly rivalry. This year quite a large number of new performers will be presented. and it is expected that some promising young singers will be heard. There are numerous entries from sopranos, mezzos and contraltos, while tenors and baritones have responded well to the invitation to enter. A fine feature this year will be the choir contests, which have always attracted the keenest interest. Tbe elocutionary classes have also filled up well. and it is anticipated that there will be excellent competition. The festival commences on Monday next, when there will be morning and afternoon elocutionary sessions at the Choral Hall, an afternoon session at the Theatre Royal, and a fine concert by competitors in the finals in the Theatre Royal in the evening at 7.45.
