SHIPS MISS LYTTELTON. HAREOUR BOARD CONCERNED. Injustice to South Jsi.-.id ports omitting to call at Dnneuni, Lyttelton ana Port Chalmers was referred to by members at to-day's meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Dr J-L T. ThacKer said he was strongly of the opinion that the new board should discuss the whole matter of intercolonial and American trading steamers and their north ol call in New Zealand. The different chambers ol commerce in the South island were taking the matte: up. and so was the Canterbury Progress League. These a esse Is went to Auckland and Wellington. but they did not come south. The board should assist the Progress League and the Chamber of Commerce, ile moved to 7 hat effect. The chairman (Mr J. SLorry) said he thought this was a most important matter. The board should consider it and assist as far as possible. Mr H. Holland, in seconding the motion, said he was pleaded to see that the hoard’s secretary was on the special committee already set up in Christchurch. In common fairness ami in common justic?, the South Island, which provided part of the subsidy for the mail services, should got its share of the visits of mail steamers. Dr Thacker: Tlmre should be a flat rate for produce from America, whether the boats come to Lyttelton or not. The chairman : I agree. We cannot expect all the vessels to come here, but we can put our case strongly in favour of a flit rate, so that the southern ports are not handicapped. That point must be put forward. The motion that the board should Support the Progress League and the Chamber of Commerce was carried.
