A DARING RUSE.
THEFT FROM CHINAMAN. (Per Prkss Association.) WELLINGTON, April 11. A Chinaman named lvwong On was robbed of £l4 in his shop at the corner of Holies ton and Wallace Streets on a recent night by a daring ruse peri>etr«,teH by a- voting man who pretended that lie was al detective. It appears that the peeudn-detective. who had previously visited Kwo-ng On’s greengrocery shop, under the pretence of searching for bidden stores of opium, went into the living-room at the baek of the shop. Alter searching the place bo naked‘the Obi naan art if he had any of the drug concealed about his clot-lies. Kwong On readily agreed to 'his pockets being examined, and the intruder, on placing his band in the 01iinn.m«n’s left pocket, found a roll of £l4 in. notes, which he promptly abstracted. Before the victim could take in tbo situation the make-believe detective luid dashed from the room, through the shop, out into the night. /When Kwoiig On reached the. io-otpath the thief had got a long start, running southward along Wallace Street. Subsequently the police were informed, but up to last night no arrest had been made.
