PERSONAL. Air E. F. H. Cain, who was transferred from Lyttelton to Clirisrtchurc& about thirteen months ago. has sold his residence. Sea View Hill. Sumner Road, Lyttelton. Mr J. Nelson, of the Shaw, Savili permanent labour ?tafl, intends to reside? in Christchurch. MAGISTRATE'S COURT. -John M’Carthy, a fireman employed ou the Corinthic was yesterday morning charged at the Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court before Air W. T. Lester. J.P.. and Captain R. Hatch well J.P.. with using obscene language in Lon don -Street. Ho pleaded not guilty and said that he did not know anything about tlie matter. He was not the man, the police evidently having a mistake and be assured the bench most emphatically that he was as innocent as a now-born child. He wished to be dealt with by a jury, but later when informed that lie would have to await his t rial until November lie decided to have the case dealt with straight ship. Evidence was given by Constable Kodgins that- at 5.30 p.m. on Saturday lie had occasion to arrest a drunken fireman, and while doing so M’Carthy, who was standing nearby with abput half a dozen other men, made use of some very filthy language against witness. After tal.iug the drunken man to the police station witness went to the M'itre Hotel to arrest the accused. Witness and Sergeant M’Holm found M’Carthy in the hotel and took him under arrest. M’C/trthy protested that he was innocent. On reaching London Street he said that he would give them something for which to arrest him, and proceeded to make use of some of the vilest language possible towards witness and the Sergeant. Sergeant M’Holm stated that he had dealt- with scores of similar cases, but the present was the very worst he had experience of. The man was perfectly sober. There were a number of close by at the time. “Accusej was warned of their presence and. he deliberatelyshouted the filthiest of language at the top of Iris voice. The bench stated that a man like the amused should have known better. If they so desired they could imprison him for twelve nciVihs. but as thev did not wish such an undesirable character to remain in ihe country they would inflict a fine of £5. " 1 thank von,” responded accused. GOLF. A match 'gentlemen v. ladies’ will be played at Ohartens Bav during the coming week-end. \
