Hadley. The Springbok footballers had made a great reputation for themselves, and he was sure the same sporting spirit obtained among South African athletes. When defeated they “ canned the squeal.” Mr A. L. Tressidder, Ashburton Athletic Club captain, said that visitors were welcomed not only because they were topnotchers, but because they came from a sister dominion that had gallantly played its part in the war. Responding, Mr I. B. Emery said that he and the members of his team appreciated the warm welcome accorded them, and South Africa, as a whole, was grateful for the hospitality tendered both footballers and athletes. These visits must strengthen the feeling of friendship that now existed, and it was the duty of all Governments to encourage such comradeship because it meant unity and a healthy national life. Clean athletics were the backbone of any country, and if the present team could increase the popularity of the sport they would shake hands and be proud. 120yds Boys' Handicap, under fourteen—.
