Thomas) appeared on a charge of stealing eleven ladies’ singlets, valued at £2. the property of the Union) Steam Ship Company. Accused pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant Jackson stated that Evans was caught by the Customs with the singlets wrapped round his body. "When questioned concerning them, he first stated that he had purchased them in San Francisco when his ship, the Wairaariito. visited that port. Later he admitted that he stole them out of the cargo from the ship at 'Wellington. Mr C. S. Thomas, for accused, said that when his client had been charged with the theft he had admitted it and given little trouble. It was the first time he had been before the Court, and he had a good character otherwise. In view of accused’s previous good character he would ask for probation. The Bench stated that it was evident that pilfering was still going on, and it had reached such heights that he would continue to deal with offences of this class as he had been used to.
