REDUCING SALARIES.

HOW THE CUT OPERATES.

(Special to the “ Star ”). WELLINGTON, January 18.

Mr Massey’s explanation of liis retrenchment proposals with his references to successive cuts of £ls. £ls and £lO is liable to cause misapprehension regarding the actual method of reduction of the salaries. From the Bill itself it is clear that these reductions are not lump sums but are at that rate per annum.

Thus, to take a specific case of a salary under £320 annum, it would be subject to reduction at, the rate of £ls per annum from January 1, which would mean a decrease in pay drawn at the end of this, month of £1 6s. A similar deduction would he made in the February and March pays, but at the end of April a further £ls per annum cut having operated, the monthly deduction till June, inclusive, would be £2 10s. while another £lO per annum cut being due in July, the reduction thence on till December, inclusive, would be £3 0s Bd, making the total deductions for this year £3l ss. As the full scale deduction would operate next year from the beginning, it. would result in a lessening of salary by a full rate of the cut, £4O. This is on the assumption that the Government findu it necessary to operate the full cuts authorised by the Bill.
