The London Labour Mayors have mein ora Used Sir Alfred Mond (Minister for Health) urging the release of the Poplar councillors to enable them to attend a conference with Cabinet Ministers in seeking an amicable settlement of the matters in dispute. Sir Alfred Mond has promised consideration. On July 29 last the Lord Chief Justice (London) issued a. writ of attachment against members of the Poplar Borough Council, for refusing to strike a rate to meet the London County Council’s levy of about £40.000. Several members of the council expressed their willingness to strike th© rate, but the Labour majority outvoted them. The majority were opposed to the levy as a nroteat against the burdens placed on poor people- On August 4 the appeal by individual members of the Poplar Council against the writ of attachment. was dismissed, but tlie appeal of the council in its corporate capacity, was allowed- A special meeting of the Poplar Council refused to levv rates to meet the County CounciFs and Asylum Board’s demand which caused the litigation.
