The Ranfurly Shield mutch. Wellington v. Otago, was played this aiternoon iu splendid weather. Wellington won tho toss and Otagokicked off against the sun. The visitors attacked. Wellington were penalised and FI arty had a shot, which was a poor attempt. Clote play followed at lialf-way and Algar kicked a speculator. which enabled Otago to force. Otago now commenced to force the pace and things became lively for Wellington., who were gradually pressed back to their own line. Algar saved tho situation by kicking into touch, but after the throw-in Ward secured and came close to scoring. Wellington got the best of it in the loose but suddenly Highly created an opening ai d centred. Owles picked up. and dived across. Richardson failed to convert. Otago . - • • 3 Wellintgon . • • A minute later Wellington set up a strong rush t-o the Otago end, where H. Nichoßs dramatically potted a fin© goal from a tight position right in front of the goal. Wellington . • • f Otago • - • . 3 The following play was very fast, a swift Otago rush, being quite an exciting attack, was held up owing to good work by Siddells and Duncan. Coombes, one of the Otago front-rankers, retire hurt, and was replaced by Wilson. D. Algar, Markham and Nicliolls got going in a bright passing rush, but Wilson marked. Wellington were not long in again knocking at Otago’s door and King got over but failed to convert. Towards the close of the spej.l, Steward put in a great run down the line, but was thrown out. Wellington were in danger, but a scrum was ordered five yards out, and H. E. Nicliolls got the ball and cleared. Then came an Otago score- From half-way Hawke broke away. He was tackled by Jackson, but Owles was handy, and picking up beat Siddells and scored under the posts.
