OBITUARY.

EDWARD PREBBLE. Tho founder of Prebbleton, Mr Edward Pvebble passed away yesterday at his residence in Sydenham. He began the township by' buying fifty acres of land from the Canterbury Association, and building a store there. The late Mr Prebblo was born in Kent, England in 1829. He arrived i.t Wellington in 1840 with his oarents. ort the ship Aurora. The family first settled in the Karori district. In 1845 Mr Prebblo, sen, removed with his sons to Canterbury. Mr Edward Prebblo was in the employ of the late Mr George Rhodes for six years. For two years he carried on a farm on his own account j.t Gebbie’s Valley. In 1854 he bought fifty acres of land from the Canterbury Association, where Prebbleton now stands, and cut it up and sold it in small sections- He built a store, which he subsequently enlarged, and which was later carried on ns a hotel. For over twenty years Mr Prebble carried on the hotel, in conjunction with his farm. He took an active part in the public affairs of tho district. For over twenty years ho was a member of the Lincoln Road and Prebbleton School Committee, and for a similar period a churchwarden m All Saints' Church, Prebbleton. He retired from his public duties in 1895. Ho married Miss Thompson, who came out to New Zealand with her parents in 1851, by the ship Duke of Portland. There is a family of six sons and two daughters.
