Sir John Findlay arrived from the north this morning. Sir Joseph Ward left for the south to-day. Ho is to bo entertained at a banquet at AA'inton by bis supporters. Mr Robert Robertson, linen manufacturer, Dunfermline, Scotland, is at present on a visit to Christchurch. Mr Percy Jones, conductor of St Augustine Band, has been appointed adjudicator for the Dunedin hand contest. The Rev G. W. Christian, of Lower Riqcarton, is making a good recovery after an operation m the hospital on Monday last. H.M.S. Renown, carrying the Prince of Wales will depart from Portsmouth on March 1. She will'arrive at badoes on March 19, Colon March 23, Panama March 24, San Diego March 31, Fiji April 13, and Auckland April 17. Mr E. XI. Just has been appointed secretary of the North Canterbury Provincial Council, the body representing the liquor trade iu North Canterbury, in succession to Mr E. Nordon- It is understood that a separate secretary will bo appointed for the retailers’ body —the Licensed Victuallers’ Association. Lieutenant-Colonel C. G. Powles, 0.. M.G., D.5.0., N.Z.S.C., Commandant TrenUiam Military Camp, has been granted three months' sick leave. Lieu-tenant-Colonel R. 0. Chosncy. N.Z.5.0., assumes command of Trent-ham Military Camp during the absence of Lieuten-ant-Colonel Powles. Following upon the retirement of Mr W. S- Short, the appointment of Mr R. W. Holmes as under-secretary of tho Public AVorks Department is announced, This post he will hold in conjunction with his present position ol engmeer-in-chicf. Air G. C. Godfrey, formerly chief clerk, has been appointed assistant under-secretary, and consequential appointments aro Air C. E. Bennett as chief clerk and Air S. AValdie as accountant. Mr A. F. Nicoll, of AA’ellington, who has been appointed Director of tho Christchurch School of Art, has completed portraits in oils of Dp Roberts and Dr Colquhoun, both of the Otago University Afedical School. The pictures are life-size, and tho subjects aro seated Tho likenesses are said to bo remarkably good. Tho portraits will be formally handed over to the University Council in Alarch, when the inaugural address to students is delivered. Air Nicoll’s oil painting of “ fsmailia ” recently exhibited in Arlington has been purchased by the Dunedin Art Gallery.
