LAND ON THE HILLS.
DEPARTMENTAL REQUESTS. SOLDIERS’ SANATORIUM. The, land on Cashmere Hills at present occupied by the Military Sanatorium was the subject of a letter from the Defence Department, read at today’s meeting of the Hospital Board. The letter read: —“The area at present occupied by the Defence Department to be leased from the board at a nominal rental, for a term of five years, with right of renewal for a further term of live years. The Department to have the right to dispose of all buildings erected at the expense of the Government, and to have the right to erect any building or carry out any work considered necessary on the property leased from the board. On conclusion of the lease, the board to have the first olfer regarding Government buildings erected on the property. The property when vacant to be left in a clean and sanitary condition. (It is not considered feasible to restore it to its former condition owing to the amount of excavation and other work which has taken place.) • The Department to present to the board, free of cost, all permanent improvements to the grounds, namely: gardens, water and gas supplies.” The Hospital Committee did not recommend the board to grant a lease but to give to the Department the occupancy of a definite area of land for so long as the institution erected thereon is used for its present purpose, namely: the treatment of soldiers suffering from tuberculosis. The recommendation was adopted.
