WOMEN SURGEONS.

EMPLOYMENT IN DOMINION HOSPITALS. The appointment of women as house surgeons at public hospitals is mentioned in the journal of the Public Health Department. “On account of the annually increasing number of women who are entering the ranks of tho medical profession, consideration lias been given to the question of the employment of these graduates in the public hospitals of the Dominion,” says the journal. “ The Department has recently approached the boards in the four centres, asking whether they are prepared to consider tho advisability of making accommodation or some o'ther arrangement whereby women doctors might obtain experience at their hospitals as house surgeons. The result of this has been that the Auckland Hospital Board has advised that it will provide accommodation for women doctors in the contemplated extension of the nurses’ home.

/‘ The Wellington _ Hospital Board is willing, on the advice of the medical superintendent, to employ a woman house surgeon at the eye, ear and throat ward. Accommodation, however, for such, officer would have to be found outside the hospital. The North _ Canterbury Board advises that there is no accommodation at the hospital for women house surgeons, and such has not been deemed necessary in view of past experience. There are at present women house surgeoncies, and the necessary accommodation for such, existing at the Dunedin Hospital. Tt would he well that the larger hospital boards hear in mind the necessity of providing accommodation in the future for house surgeons in such a, way that vacancies may be filled by members of either sex.”
