SHORTAGE OF TRUCKS.
The not infrequent cut-cry about shortage of rolling stock at Lyttelton is a»"ain engaging the attention of several °of the shipping companies doing business in the port. At this cpriod of the year the Railway Department generally transforms several hundreds of waggons into carriages in order to cope with' the extraordinary passenger traffic. but when the port is busy the trucks cannot be spared and consequently much inconvenience is caused. An illustration of the need for some reform is given in connection with the presence in Lyttelton of the Canterbury Steamship Company's Calm, which arrived on Monday morning from the West Coast. In the ordinary course the whole of her freight of timber could bo discharged in about two days, but on this trip the vessel has been seriously delayed by trucks, and up to yesterday only 50,000 feet of timber had been ' landed. Apart from the heavy burden of port charge.?, the itinerary of the steamer is badly upset. It was intended to dock her in Lyttelton today, but this step is now out of the question, and it is more than likely that the craft will be sent to another port The T. nion Company's Poherua was also delayed, and the greater part of her cargo of coal had to be discharged into hulks.
