PROTECTING THE FOOD.
SUPPLIES IN THE CITY. GUARDED AGAINST DUST AND FLIES. Tlip. health officers in Christchurch luivo taken steps to protect iood supplies in the city against flies and dust. The regulations drawn up a short time ago by tho Department of Internal Affairs arc being enforced, quietly but firmly. The regula linos wore gazetted under i*sio Snlo of Food and Drugs Act. They provide, amongst other tilings, that iniifc, vegetables, confectionery and meat exposed for snlo must be effectually protected by being covered with gan/.e or other means. In somo cases shopkeepers have had special windows erected, and these aro closed when flies and dust are about. Others have gauzo doors, others use muslin, and a few havo specially made fans. _ Christchurch is not pestered _ with flies to tho same extent as cities in more northern latitudes, but the hot season is coming on and tho few sample days experienced lately have brought home to tho departmental officers tho necessity for seeing that tho instructions issued by tho Minister for Internal Affairs are observed.
