THOSE OILSKINS.

TO THE EMTOK. Sir,—The other day we were told, in, the columns of the -'Press," on th« authority of Mrs Bovle. that, the men on board H.M'.S. New Zealand were in need of oilskins, and now Lady Liverpool is calling on the generous pubho to make good the deficiency. 1 sayl this i.s a disgrace to the Admiralty if it is true. If the New Zealand's crew have not got oilskins presumably the other crews are equally unprovided for in theso bitter days. Tf Dick S ! eddon were alive he would cable Home and want to know all about it—spoiling the ship for a ha'porth of tar. In the meantime round goes the hat again. Why do not Mrs Boyle and Lady Liverpool call upon some of our rich Canterbury people—some of these racing squatters, for instance—to put up the whole wad for these oilskins while the townspeople look after the cooker and the patriotic and other funds? Those weekly-appeals by the wealthy to tho workers to pay, pay, nay, are getting pretty hot. As far as I and some ot my friends are concerned we intend to' look on for a bit.—l am, etc.. JUGGINS JUMOB. Avonside, January 8.
