"NOT SATISFIED."
THE TWEEDS BUSINESS. MERCHANTS' FURTHER ACTION. EXPLANATIONS WANTED. The Canterbury Industrial Association still wishes to discuss with the Board of Governors of Christ's College the wisdom of the Board's recommendation to parents to dross their boys in English tweeds. On Wednesday the Board wrote to Mr W. Guise 'Brittan, the burs'ar, ipointing out that most of the hoys at the college will have to earn their living in this country, and that the Board's recommendation is not in the interests of the students or of New Zealand, and asking the Board to allow Mr J. B. Laurenson (president of the Association) and Messrs P. Hercus and W. W. Charters to wait on it- and place this position beforo it. Mr Brittan has replied, stating that the Association's letter will bo placed before the Board at its meeting on October 10. This reply has not satisfied tho Association, which feels that tho question is sufficiently urgent to be dealt with as soon as possible, and yesterday Mi- R. S, Badger sent the following letter to Mr Brittan: — "Dear Sir,—! haro to acknowledge with thanks your note of the twenty-fourth instant, but in view of the fact that this matter has, caused considerable comment, I am instructed to ask if it would not be possible for your Board to meet a deputation from this Association at an earlier date than October 10, or, failing this, at any rate, on that dato. This request is reinforced by information just received. It appears that a leading retailer applied to the representative of the firm indicated in your letter for samples of the cloth, and, instead of being able to obtain the cheapest of these at the price r.tr.ted in your circular—namely, 6s 10s per yard—he was quoted -7s 6d, and tho retail price will necessarily bo between 10s and lis, so that, on the face of it, the circular is certainly incorrect, and the matter is one that my Association feels should be cleared up without delay. _lt is hoped, therefore, that you will ho able to arrange for tho matter to be discussed earlier than the date . indicated. Venturing to thank you in advance for your courteous attention. Yours truly, R. S. Badger, secretary."
