OTTAWA, August 1. The Grand Trunk Railway Company is prepared to raise wages by 15 per cent, A settlement of the strike is probable. ,

NEW SOUTH WALES MINERS,

SYDNEY, August 1. The Southern Collieries Wages Board has given an award. Amongst the men's demands conceded are , eight hours bank to bank for miners, preference for unionists and other concessions in regard to cavilling and working machines and payment for pillars slabs, while labour other than miners has secured a reduction of hours to nine from bank to bank. There is a slight increase in wages. The president of the Coalminers' Employees' Association states that the award is very satisfactory. The men have not got all they wanted but have obtained a substantial improvement.

THE ROSS FLAT DISPUTE. [From Our Corpuspondent.] GKEYMOLTH, August 1

A conferenco of the parties concerned in the Rcss Flat troublo has been proceeding since- yesterday. Some of the proposals by both parties were accepted at a preliminary meeting. Matters in dispute, on which the directors submitted counter proposals, wore discussed at a miners 1 meeting this afternoon, but no finality was reached. The men will continue to' work for another week, during which time negotiations will proceed for a final settlement.

THE PAPAROA MINE. [From Our Correspoxdevt.] GREYMOTJTH, August 1

A mass meeting of miners employed at ■the Paparoa coal mine was held tonight, to consider, so ifc is unofficially stated, a telegram from Mr J. P. Maxwell (chairman, of directors) offering to either come down himself or get another director to visit the mine and inquire into and adjust all cause for dispute, provided that tho miners in tho meantime returned to work. The result is not vet (10 p.m.) known locallv.
