WRONGFUL ENGAGEMENT OF LABOUR.. AN EMPLOYER FINED. • At the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court to-day tho Canterbury Steamship Company was charged with having committed '1 breach of the Lyttelton stevedores' award i.ll having engaged labour at a place other than before the Coronation. Hal!, Eyttelton, that being the pla.ee spccilied m the award for the engaging of labour. Tho case was conducted bv Mr W. H. fiagger on behalf of the- Union, and Mr 11. Monro appeared as a director of the defendant company. • Mr H agger explained that- two men, wh ) wer<>' not members of the Union, had been engaged to work on the steamer Breeze as she lay at the cattle wharf, the engagement being made ulongside the .shin. Mr Monro admitted the breach, but pleaded that tho mate did not; know the men were m/t unionists. It would have taken foriy mi mites to ,<:o to the Coronation Hall to get the men, and iu that time half ihe load of lambs had been landed. It was the company'.- duty to la lid. tho sheep as soon possible.
His Worship said -Usat 110 inconvenience caused by the award justified s.)i employer in setting it aside. Objection sh-oakt have been made to the award at the time it was before tJic Arbitration Court. There whs a preference to unionists clause in the award, and that made the matter all the worse.
