MR T. RITCHIE.
Tho death is announced of Mr'T. Ritchie, who was until lately an inspector of schools under tho North Cantorbury Education Board. He had been in. bad health for some time, and he passed away last .night. He was bom in County Down, Ireland, in 18-14, and attended several national schools, subsequently receiving private tuition with a view to entering on a university course. He commenced his career as a teacher in the Irish National schools, and in IS6B was selected for service under the Queensland Board of Education. He landed in Queensland in 1869. During his residence there of seven years lie was headmaster of several schools. In 1876 he came to Canterbury, and joined tho Canterbury JVnrd of .Education as master of the West Oxford School. Ho was transferred to Onawa, whero he remained as headmaster for twelve years. In 1893 he was appoiued an inspector, and, on the departure of Dr Anderson four years ago, became senior inspector. He was also a member of the Board of Advice of the Training College. In March last his health broke down, and he took a holiday, visiting Sydney and Brisbane. On returning he again resumed his duties. About six weeks ago lie had a relapse, from which he never recovered. Whilst in charge of the Opawa School Mr Ritchie entered upon a. course of study at Canterbury College, and graduated there in 1887. lie took an interest in athletics, and was for some time an active member of the Pioneer Bicycle Club. Mr Ritchie was a member of the St Augustine Masonic Lodge. In 18H3 he married a daughter of Mr •John Clarke, of Beragh. County Tyrone, and he leaves a widow and. four 'daughters.
