ALLEGED CRUELTY.
MOTHER COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. [Per I'jtEss Ahsocution.'] WELLINGTON, July 2/. At the .Magistrate's Court to-day \ ale'itiu" Moiser nas charged with having ill-treated a child. four years and ten months old. The charge arose out oi a -ni tiro at defendant's hou.ie. when the child was rescued from a burning bed. JkSvulcmw -was (.uvea t;y neighbours that they had frequently .heard tlio chud crying. One witness staled that on July 18 alio had noticed the Iron! room of Moiser's house on fire. Al! the doors mid windows were icrited. With a man who was in the vicinity she had broken into the house and had there seen the child brought out. There was a 'charred band of rag clinging tc the cliild and a loop was tied round its neck. Tlio ehild was in a filthy condition, and there were sores about iho faco, arms and. head. ft was also stated that the child Mas in an emaciated condition. Accused told a constable that tin' had k-lt home about '2 p.in. on the day of' the lire. She had loft the child, in bed with a string attached to its clothes, and had tied it to the bed. That had been her usual practice. Thero wore matches on the dressingtable, but when sh© had returned they were, scattered about. Accused, who dec-laved that sho was innocent of the charge, was committed lor trial.
