WASTE WATER-POWER.

A WEST COAST PROPOSAL [Per Press Association.]

> HOKITIKA, May o. A public meeting of miners at Rimu last night carried a motion urging the speedy and favourable consideration of the water power regulations on the attention of the Government, and copies of the motion were telegraphed to the Premier and the Minister of Mines. The local . proposal is to use the waste water running in rivers for power purposes, and to pump the river water on to high alluvial terraces for mining operations, It has been suggested that the Government charges an excessive rate for the right to lift waste water, and tho Department was urged - to makethe payments more reasonable. Capital to the amount of from £80,000 to £100,000 would be required for the undertaking, *but it was mentioned at the meeting that tlie promoting syndicate was in a fair 'way to raise the amount if tho rights were granted on reasonable terms. In the ©ours, of the discussion the delay over the matter by the Government was strongly condemned, aa also the reported heavy charges which, at 5s per horse-power meant an impost of £6000 per year for tho power required. This was considered altogether excessive, and a bar to capital favourably taking up the speculation.
