The Labour Party agreed to support Mr Deakin's proposal to vote a quarter of a million. towards the coastal harbours defence scheme. Mr Fisher, leader of the party, during the debate on old age pensions, said he did not consider the measure sufficiently liberal. The subject of wireless telegraphy was mentioned in- the Federal House, and the Postmaster-General was asked if the Government contemplated establishing communication with New Zealand, but the Minister replied that it was not intended to do so at present. The following return showing the values to the Eastern Extension Company of the Australasian traffic, was laid on the table of the House: — In 1901 the value was £298,115, in 1902 £246,184, in 1903 £183,228, in 1904 £194,503, in 1905 £198,839, in 1906 £211,254, in 1907 £216,933. The Surplus Revenue Bill has passed the Senate.
