Iv the match Staffordshire versus Durham, Barnes took six wickets for 23 runs and six wickets for 7 runs, taking four wickets with successive balls. Rhodes, Blythe, Barnes and Hutchings have accepted the invitation to visit Australia. Hirst and Lilley have declined. It is understood that the^r, with Hayward and l"yldesley, consider that the Marylebone's offer of £300 is insufficient to recoup their business losses during their absence. The newspapers deplore the defection of the leading batsmen. The "Daily Mail" suggests that Australia ehould offer better, terms, to enable the Marylebone Club to j give the professionals £400.
In the plebiscite at present a being taken on the question of district cricket, of 360 voting papers issued, 270 have so far been returned. The poll closes on Saturday next.
