THE FISHING SEASON.
The telegraphic reports received at the Tourist Office thie morning gave the following information as to the> statf* of Canterbury rivers: — Ashley, "YVaimakariri, S&hvyn and Rakaia clear ; Ashburton (north branch) dirty, Ashburton (south branch) and Rangitata discoloured, Opihi fishable, "Waitaki in good order. Yesterday's nor'-west weather was altogether against fishing, arid though there were a. good many anglers who .refused to- surrender to "the elements, no Large baskets of fish were reported. The clearness of the light and the wind were the worst enemies of the fisherman, the wind being so bad in the Waimakariri that most of those who tried found it impossible to cast a lineAmong the few who secured any tTOut yesterday were Messrs L. Begins and C. Rides, whose record tflis season is almost phenomenal- From the Balswell River at Motukarara they took eleven fish. Mr Biggins claimed cix, weighing 281 b, and ranging from J 71b downwards. ' ■ . .
