DEATH AT THE POLICE STATION.
A PRISONER DIES IN THE CELLS. This morning at the Police Station a prisoner who had been in. custody sines last Saturday suddenly died in his cell. The prisoner was "William Thomas Newman, a station cook, who was arrested on a charge of drunkenness on Saturday afternoon at half-past three, and was placed in. the lock-up. _ Yester- ! day morning Newman complained of i feeling unwell, and Dr Byrnes was callied in. Medicine was administered in I accordance with the doctor's instructions. i This morning at seven o'clock New--1 man got up and took his medicine. He then appeared to he in a normal condition. Shortly afterwards the constable, hearing a moan in Newmans cell, entered and found Newman sitting in a corner gasping. Dr Symes j was immediately 6ent for, but the man expired before his arrival. Newman appears to have been a single man, aged between fifty-eight and sixty years. Dr Symes is of the opinion that death was due to heart failure, accelerated by a drinking bout. An inquest will be held to-day at 5 p.m. •
