POLITICAL NOTES.
[From Otjb, Correspondent.] WELLINGTON, October 15. DUPLICATE RECEIPTS. A deputation from the Wellington Chamber of Commerce this morning waited on the Minister hi charge of the Stamp Department to urge upon him the justice of at once introducing an amendment releasing commercial people and others whose business requires the issue of duplicate receipts, from the necessity for stamping duplicates as well as the originals, as decided in a caee before the Court a few days ago. The Minister said he appreciated the points made by the deputation. As a matter of fact he had drafted the following new clause to the Bill at present before the committee of theHouse: — "Where, pursuant to any custom of trade where receipt® are given in sets, it shall be sufficient if >only one of theset be stamped, provided that the parts not stamped be clearly and distinctly marked at the time when the original" receipt is given, showing that they respectively form part of the eet. Any person is liable to a fine not exceeding £50 who gives any receipt purporting t-o be one of a set withoutseeing that one of such set is duly stamped, or who gives? any receipt purporting to be one of a set tha^is not in fact one of a .set." The question of stamping agreements outlined in the Bill before the House was also referred to by Mr Duthie. In reply, Mr Carroll said that this matter was also under consideration by the committee at present engaged on the Bill, and he thought that the deputation would, be perfectly satisfied when the Bui emerged from committee.
