POLICEMAN'S ADVENTURE
SHEBEEN HUNTING. Among a gang of navvies working in a lonely jpart of the Peak district there ■recently appeared a new hand. He wore the regulation attire of the navvy, including clogs, but as a matter of fact he was a Derbyshire county constable on the look-out for a shebeen. He worked peacefully for some time until one of the genuine hands innocently approached him with the request that he would go to the hut and fetch two pints of beer. Right willingly he obliged, hurried to the spot, secured his evidence, and returning with the liquor was invited to "sup," but declined. ' . This roused the suspicion of _ nis mates, and the subsequent proceedings convinced him that the locality was not healthy for policemen. He was very roughly handled, and cleared out of the camp with despatch. His experience was afterwards related in the local police court.
