PROFESSOR AMONG THIEVES.
. Towards the end of July, a gentleman, who is understood to be a professor of the University of Oxford, staying in Paris, made the acquaintance of a. man, a British subject, at the office of a local newspajper. The stranger offered to accompany Mm to Switzerland, a proposal which was accepted. Shortly afterwards the professor cashed a cheque for £50 at an English banking agency in the Avenue de FOpera in the presence of liis new acquaintance. T,lie two men then went to a cafe in the Place de la Rcpublique, where, before long, they were joined by two compatriots. Suddenly tihe professor, after swallowing a few mouthfuls of the refreshment he had ordered, fainted. When he recovered his senses bis companions had disappeared, taking with them the amount of the cheque. The Police Commissary of St Ambroise has opened an inquiry into the aifair, and has taken possession' of the glass from which tie professor drank, as it is believed that the thieves drugged the liquor in order to stupefy their victim.
