DEATH OF A NOTED SCIENTIST.
M. Renard, the well-known Belgian scientist, died at Brussels on July 9, after a distinguished career. In 1878 he was called by Sir Wyville Thomson to assist in the study of the marine specimens brought up by H.M.S. Challenger. M. Renard published in 1891, in collaboration with Sir John Murray, a report on deposits in deep seas, which served as a basis fo<r the science of oceanography. He was formerly a. Jesuit, but forsook fche priesthood in 1901,- a?id was married in London. He was .also a professor of the Uiiiversitv of Ghent. /
