New- York, on Thursday, July 9, was sweltering \mder a, torrid wave. The temperature in the afternoon reached 102deg in the street. The intense heat killed three babies in the tenement district, and left many more in a dangerous condition. Four adults succumbed to the heat, and the list of prostrations was long. Horses dropped from exhaustion. The tramway cars stopped occasionally to permit the conductors and drivers to quench their thirst at the fountains. Citizens left in vast numbers for the seashore and the mountains. There were then indications that the intense heat would last for several days-
