THE COST OF SALUTES.

A curious fact in connexion with the visit of the American Squadron to Kiel has come to light. The cruiser Machias, it appears, completely u»ed up her supply of powder in the firing of salutes. The American naval offioers state thab during theKiel week they used more powder thau. wa.s burned throughout the Spanish-American War. The Machias had, in fact, to obtain a further supply of powder in order to fire all the salutes that were required. It ia calculated that the German and American warships, during the visit, fired altogether 3600 guns in salutes, omd as each shot costs about ss, this represents a total expendi. ture of £900.
