MEETINGS OF SOCIETIES.
♦ / On Thursday evening the Pioneer Amatwir Bicycle and Athletic Club met the Christchurch Cycling Club in a billiard and ping-pong match, at the rooms of the Christchurch Cycling Club. Both contests were woa by the Pioneer Club's teams, who scored 49 against 28 games in pingpong, and 459 against 384 points in billiards. Return ma'tches are to be played at the Pioneer Club rooms on Thursday evening next. At the weekly meeting of the East Belt Literary and Musical Society, held on Thursday evening, a paper was read on "The Planet Mars," by the Rev C. H. Laws, B.A. The lecture was illustrated with a set o diagrams. The weekly meeting of the Lyttelton Literary and Debating Society was held last night in the -Presbyterian Schoolroom, and was largely attended. Mr J. McGregor, vice-president, was in the chair. A debate took place on the question — " Should; Racing Sweeps be Permitted?" Captain' Manning opening in the affirmative, and Mr G. Laurenson, M-H.R., in the negative.
